3 stills edited, most effective and least effective

Out of these stills I have chosen the most effective still to represent each of these three genres;
  • Image
  • Performance
  • Narrative
Most Effective Stills

I have chosen this still as the most effective Image still.

This still represents the image genre as it shows a close up of myself and defines my features. This is an effective still as the Desaturation effect has been used to make it black and white. This complements the black hair and gives more of a contrast between the colour of the hair and skin which makes it effective and gathers more attention.

I have chosen this still as the most effective Performance still.
This still shows Ryan playing the piano in the top right and Darwin is in the top left singing and looking back. This is a good representation of the performance genre as it shows both of them contributing towards what would be a performance of a song. The split screen effect is effective as it means the audience can see what is happening in both images at the same time, as the song would be a mixture of singing and instrumentals in the background.

I have chosen this still as the most effective Narrative still.
This still shows 3 people sitting down drinking tea together located at a table, which represents what is going on in their life at that moment of time. The text makes this still more effective as it helps the audience understand what is going on. The text reads 'tea time ft. vince's lip'. This connotes that they are literally sitting down and drinking tea, which may take away any doubts the audience has.

Least Effective Stills
I have chosen this still as the least effective Image still.
This still is not that effective as there is too much going on. The text says 'get the london look' however the close up is too close. This means that it is pointless and could confuse the audience as you can not see the outfit. This would be better as a long shot.

I have chosen this still as the least effective Performance still. The effect on Ryan which makes him glimmer named 'Dazzle' is too much and takes over the picture. We cannot see Ryan clearly and the dazzle puts too much focus on him rather than the piano, as there is no glimmer/dazzle there.

I have chosen this still as the least effective Narrative skill.
This is the least effective as it is black and white which gives the audience an idea that the narrative is set in the past. We did not want the still to be presented that way, as we intended it to be present, so this could potentially confuse the audience.

Comparing with real media

In this photo is a face of Harry Styles from One Direction. This is similar to my image still in the sense that it is an eye-level close up of his face and a black and white effect is being used in the same way to define his features more. However, there is a difference in the fact that his clothing is being shown more in the photo and he is smiling and looking slightly away from the camera rather than directly at it. I could have improved my still by not making it as close it was - so that the clothing could be seen more. To improve the real media still it could have been zoomed out slightly more so that all of his hair can be seen so that the full image can be given. The stills reflect the image genre by showing what a boy looks like in the sense of showing how they dress, their smile and how they act.

In this photo is Olly Murs playing piano. This is similar to the still of Ryan as you can see the piano being played and his face. However, in the still of Ryan it is a mid-shot which does not show the whole of his body, whereas in the photo of Olly Murs it is a long shot and shows more of the piano and his legs. To improve our still we could have done a long shot instead as it looks much more professional and makes the piano look bigger and more important. To improve the real media still it could have less detail on the piano so there is more focus on the person. The stills reflect the performance genre by showing them play the piano and singing, as they would be for a song.

In this photo is Taylor Swift. This is quite different to the still of the three sitting down drinking tea as it is telling a story but in a different way. It shows Taylor looking through the fence at someone and it is telling a story, so this could be argued ot be a similarity. To improve our still we could've added some muted dialogue to make it obvious they are talking to each other. To improve the real media still it could be more obvious to make it a two shot so we know who she is looking at rather than having to watch the whole video. The stills reflect the narrative genre as it shows a story.
